The 1984 Winter Olympics poster by Andy Warhol was printed using offset lithography. This method involves transferring ink from a plate to a rubber blanket and then onto paper, allowing for high-quality, mass-produced prints with vibrant colors. The poster was published by Svjetlost Publishing House in Sarajevo and was part of a limited edition portfolio created for the Sarajevo Winter Olympics. Warhol’s "Speed Skater" design was one of several artworks commissioned to celebrate the event. This official version has the dimensions of 33.47 × 24.41 inches (85 × 61.4 cm). This version is the ©1983 L-M edition, as printed on the bottom of the poster. A slightly different edition exists and has dimensions of 36 × 24 inches (91.4 × 61 cm). Andy Warhol was commissioned to design a poster for the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo as part of a broader effort to blend art and sports. The Yugoslav Olympic Committee wanted to add a cultural and artistic dimension to the Games, so they invited several renowned artists—including Warhol, Henry Moore, Cy Twombly, and Michelangelo Pistoletto—to create promotional artwork. Warhol’s poster, titled "Speedskater," was inspired by the dynamic movement of a skater in full stride. Using his signature bold neon outlines and vibrant colors, he captured the energy and motion of the sport. His work was included in the Art and Sport portfolio, a collection of 16 original prints published in a limited edition of 200. This commission was unique because Warhol was primarily known for his celebrity portraits and consumer culture themes, but his Olympic poster demonstrated his ability to distill movement and athleticism into a minimalist yet powerful composition.
